Yes, joking helps. I was reading on one site today that we, the children of Ns, often develop a sharp sense of humor after we are able to understand what humor is.

Iz... when I went into the hospital to have back surgery, I was scared. I had little kids, I was in chronic pain, I didn't want to have surgery and die. Well, when I came out of the anesthesia, a priest was in the room, and I said, "Oh, I am very glad you are not here to read me my last rites." He got upset!!!!!!!!! I was joking and he got serious and started asking me about my faith. LOL. The rest of the nurses and the room cracked up...
