I believe there was a time in our country when labor unions were necessary. Even my father, who hates unions as much as anyone (and not without reason) concedes that. I don't think doing a job in which you place your life on the line daily (say, the Boston police in the early 1900s) for so little pay men couldn't afford housing much less families, and organizing to demand reasonable pay as a result, equates demanding something for nothing. Hardly. The problem is that the unions quickly became that which they professed to revile, and in some cases, what benefitted the union leadership was at odds with what benefitted the workers, so workers were again, ultimately, screwed. I've watched the UFW turn on their "free to choose" membership when those members, sick of paying dues for nothing, rally for a vote, and it's not pretty. It's all about exploiting the membership for the benefit of the labor leaders. So on it goes.
