A word of warning about privacy settings...
« on: December 22, 2006, 11:55:17 AM »
Hello Everyone-

I have been a poster on this site for over a year now.  I am both shocked and dismayed to find upon my return, that my email address has become public knowledge without my consent.  I originally set it to private, but since the board has been down, maybe our settings have become disrupted.  I haven't posted for a number of months, and feel so embarrassed and exposed to find on such a soul-bearing forum as this, that my email address (which includes my full name) has been visible for all the world to see.

I have since cancelled my account.  I have also contacted Doctor Grossman.  This has really affected me deeply and I dread to think that someone has recognised me on this forum.

Anon.

I'm so disappointed, there I was bearing my soul and thinking I was safe in my anonimity.
It's a horrible feeling to think that someone you know may be reading it...

I think that Dr. Grossman will probably change that setting if you have trouble with it.

I dont know if this will make you feel worse, but you probably should know that if anyone uses a search engine under your screen name they will pick up all your posts to this board.

Thank you for bring that up, I'm sorry this has happened. I remember the first time I posted, all my information was theire to see, I was shocked. I have to admit I'm still a novice to it all.
On a great note, I emailed Dr. Grossman and he removed my information for me immediately (i didn't know how to) and was so appreciative of his immediate help.

I hope you can come back safely if that is possible for you, I understand and am so sorry. (seasons)

I have since changed the setting!  The problem I had was that the setting changed itself without my knowledge.  I have since closed my account, and I am hoping Dr Grossman will erase my posts, as I forgot to do so before I closed my account and now I can't erase them as I have locked myself out of my account...  I panicked

I can't imagine how you feel. Hoping you are able to delete your posts with Dr. Grossmans help.

Good Luck

Thanks Seasons, and yeah Bean, I think that's a wise thing to do.  I am going to create a new account now.

Thanks

Thank you for this warning.  My email was NOT hidden even though I selected for it to be so.  I changed it to an obscure account.  - GS

Hi everyone,

I have checked out the board and the settings with regard to e-mail address, and they appear to be working properly.

Please inform me if you are having a problem, but first, I want to make sure everyone understands the way the board works with regard to e-mail privacy.

1.  If you post when you sign in (i.e. as opposed to posting as guest) your e-mail will be displayed to the public only if you left unchecked the box under "account related settings" that says:  "Hide e-mail address from public?"

2.  This is very important! When you are signed in, your e-mail address will be displayed to you beside every one of your posts.  But this does not mean it is displayed to the public.  (And by "public" I mean both guests and signed-in members).  No one else, besides you and me (the board moderator) will see your e-mail address.

3.  If you want to double check whether your e-mail address is being displayed to the public, you need to do two things:  1)  log off, peruse the board as a "guest", and check to see whether your e-mail address is still displayed next to your posts, and 2)  ask another signed-in member to see whether your e-mail address appears next to your posts.

4.  If you are posting as a guest (i.e. without signing in), your e-mail address will be displayed.  This is necessary for the safety of the board.

5.  Using fake or incorrect e-mail addresses will interfere with your using the Personal Messaging system, and will seriously compromise the safety of the board.

Best,

Richard

Ok, sorry to go on about this, but I am confused.  I have set my new profile to hide my email address.  However, next to my posts, there is a little envelope and when you click on it, it shows you my email address...  Can someone tell me if they can view it also, or is it just me?  I have invented the new email address I am using now, so I am not so concerned about it, but I am just curious.

Thanks

SSS,

I dont see an envelope next to your name.  So looks like your anonymous.

sss - I am having the same problem as you are describing and i KNOW that my e-mail was hidden previously.  The box next to Hide E-mail address is clicked but my address still shows so I chaged my e-mail address to one I seldom use that doesn't contain my name.- GS

Hi everyone,

Let me try again to help.  That little white envelope beside your posts that displays your e-mail address--just because you see it, doesn't mean it is displayed on other people's computers.  If you have chosen to hide your e-mail from the public, the only people who see that little white envelope with your e-mail address are you and me (the moderator).  This is the way the program has always worked--nothing has changed.  If you want to make sure this is true, 1)  log off, peruse the board as a "guest", and check to see whether your e-mail address is still displayed next to your posts, (that little white envelope should not be there unless you posted as a "guest") and 2)  ask another signed-in member to see whether that little white envelope with your e-mail address appears next to your posts (again, it should not be there unless you posted as a guest).

I hope this helps,

Richard
