Narcissism Series in my Local Paper
« on: March 08, 2004, 10:00:43 PM »
Here is a link to my local newspaper's 3 part series on Narcissism.  Sunday was the first part, today the second, tomorrow the third:

http://www.app.com/app/ego/

A few months back the writer of the series asked for stories on narcissists in reader's lives.  I wrote about N's in my family, but haven't seen anything I sent in used in the paper.   However, I was very happy to have even the smallest chance to contribute to the general knowledge pool of the writer for this important subject.  It is very important to the public to know about the "N" menace.

Okay, just scanned through "The Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism" article.  Hilarious!!  Must read!!

My personal favorites:

Quote
1. Shamelessness: Arrogant, thick-skinned, aloof. Until somebody mentions the piece of spinach stuck to our teeth. And the narcissist lashes out at the person who mentioned the spinach, the fools who served the spinach, the farmers who grew the spinach and the God who made the stupid spinach.

Quote
4. Envy: There's only so much love in the world, only so much admiration, only so much stuff. If you've got some, that means there's less for me. Fork it over.

If you want to sing out, sing out
And if you want to be free, be free
'Cause there's a million ways to be, you know that there are
-- Cat Stevens, from the movie Harold and Maude

I'm glad you both enjoyed the series so far.  I have to check out what they have for the last part today.

I've been helping some of my fellow workers recognize what appears to be rampant N'ism in some of their family members.  It is sad to see the lightbulb go on over their head when they read the traits, etc.  But knowledge is power.

Thanks Lynn, for the great link.  It's hard to believe that this issue is being addressed all over the place.  I still find it hard to swallow that so many people are actually like this -- but then you get hit hard with some good old Narcisstic slap in the face, insulting, attacking, blaming, rewriting history, projecting, just plain old nonsensicle psychobabble and after you pick yourself up off the floor, and shake your head a few times, you say to yourself.  Yep, they're out there, all right!!!!!!

Thanks for the link Liz. It's great the awareness that's snowballing on this topic and how it effects devastate people and their lives. I've found Narcissisum is a sensitive issue and subject to bring up in the workplace, but NPD, whooah, I try very hard not to got there unless pressed. Probably depends on the type of workplace too. Mine is full of A type personalities so it's both appropriate and inappropriate, and I have to walk a very fine line and not be too evangelical about it. Did you see the link that Rosencrantz found as well? The Krishna's discussing Narcissum too!  The general awareness is definitely growing.

I thought so too, because so few people understand anything about it.   When I printed the articles out and put them on the counter at work, two of my work buddies came to me after reading them and asked why I did that, I explained about my situation.  This led to discussion with these two friends, one of whom I already knew has a major family problem occurring right now, the other I didn't know about, but the discussion helped him bring it out, a situation with his brother.  They asked me for more information on the topic, so  I gave them information to read (basic stuff) and told them where to go for more research if they felt they needed it.

Hi Lizbeth,

Yes, thanks for posting!  I especially enjoyed the seven deadly sins and the interviews of the psychologists.  You can see a Polaroid of my NSIL in Deadly Sin #7.

And the analogy of the patching the tire is right on, too.  Ns don't need therapy or insight.  Just give 'em another shot of mojo!  :)

Thanks again, Seeker

Hi Seeker, I'm glad that you and others enjoyed reading the series published in my local paper.  I was amazed to see that they decided to do such a series in the first place.
