classroom terrorists - continues

Student comes to class, five minutes. Then he asks permission to go out to his locker because he forgot his book. Teachers says ok, you need to work. When he comes back he asks permission to go to the office to so something about his schedule. Teachers says, you need to finish your work. Student says, if I do not finish , can I take it home? Teacher says, yes, you can tke it home if you work hard here and you did not finish, by all means, take it home and finish. At this time 30 min of the class are gone. He goes to the office, brings a note from the office and sits down. Student starts working on his vocabulary of another class. Teacher says, you need to finish your work for this class before you start working for another class. Student syas, you are a horrible teacher and you should find another job. Give me a zero if you want. Teacher says, OK.

This behavior with this students is every single day. He does not want to do anything, his mother does not back up the teacher, he knows that the administration is on his side, and he thinks he is above others.

I do not dislike the person, but I dislike the behavrio and feel very sorry that he will have a bad grade if he constinues doing what he is doing.

The verbal assault of this student towrards the teacher is an abuse. But what can be done? Not much.

Any teacher will have at least one student like that, every year. Lucky if it is only one.

The worst, there are many students that are willing to learn, have a good attitud and are excited about studies, but this kind of students ruin almost everything.

I went to the chat rooms in the teacher.net, and people told me to write him up and send him to the office. I think that is what I need to do with this abusive student. They are so rich in their family that they own a bank. He really thinks he is above the law.

The way I see it.... you have a few choices.

1)  Write him up every time he pulls that crap then forget about it.

2) Shrug when he's a dick, tell him it's his grade.... then give him the grade he deserves at the end of the sememster.  No sweat off your back and the other kids get your attention.  Not him.

3) Ask the administration how they want you to handle this boy's innapropriate defiant rude behavior then do it and don't worry about it.

Sounds like the kid's not really worth all this struggle to me.  He might start to care if you stop, kwim?

Did I leave any choices out?

Well, one of my tormentors had ISS yesterday. I had peace yesterday. The class was peaceful with out him. Today it was peaceful too. But I did not want to force them, I did not want to fight them, just let them do what they wanted, of course, remain deated, and talk in a voice that was not heard by the other classes.
The good thing, the ones that always work, they did their work, the ones that never work, did not do their work, and I did nothing but answer a few questions of the ones that were voluntarily working. I sat at my desk and facilitated the work of those who wanted to work and did nothing for those who only wanted to talk and do nothing. I felt sorry for those who were not working, but I felt there was nothing I could do for them.
At the end, i got the same results than when I am working hard, desperately forcng some learning and crucifying my self.
So, I guess I know what I have to do with that class.
My other five classes are excellent and I teach very nicely with them, with out big effort, they just let me teach, they are different. The answer, i dont know.
I just know that I had a better week than the last week and I did less effort.

what makes me mad, if I write them up, they get a one hour detention. If a native English teacher writes them up they get ISS.

Credibility.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even for 911 calls, they take less seriously people with accents.

So, as a foreign I have to prove my self, over and over. No matter that I am American citizen.

I took my students to a field trip. To see a Latin Ballet. They were criticizing every single thing, until the ballet started to perform. I materially saw their mouths open, they were surprised and impressed with the wardrobs and the dances. After that went to a Latin restaurant with a buffet for 8.00 dollars. They loved the empanadas, and the rice, and the music.
They had a good time and loved it. They will acept my ideas more easily now. They know I know what I am doing.

I really enjoyed that post, Lupita.

Sounds like so much fun.... the day and your reaping the benefits of doing a wonderful job educating these young adults.

Hard to get them to drop their mouths open these days, IMO.

Yes Lighter, youa re right, the other problem is about cognitive error thinking. I allow one boy souer my day. I have 170 students, and on this whole week, only one 16 year old rich boy whose family owns a bank, and he thinks he is above the law, I allowed that only one, to make me feel bad all day.
So, I have to work on that.
Thank you, you might be able to help on how to feel well no matter what.
Again detachement, besides, black and white thinking, and all or nothing, and should statements. I have the knowledge but can not apply it.

It is a shame that you have all that success and find it dimmed by the small number of students that aren't respectful. 

A really small percentage on the whole.....  and just the one, lately.

There's a difference between feeling negative about him and positive about the majority, isn't there?

Still black and white thinking but.... positive thinking.

I'm glad you seem to be feeling better and understanding your process.
