As I listen to the radio these days, John Mayer's "Daughters" comes on fairly frequently. I absolutely adore that song - and I am sure it resonates with alot of the rest of you as well...

And then I got to thinking about other songs that are like it... Butterfly Kisses too.... Does anyone else have any favorites?

Flowergirl,
Funny you should mention the John Mayer song.  My daughter was taking a calligraphy class last semester and she used some of the lines from that song as one of her projects.  I have wondered if that has more meaning for her now that her father is choosing to have so little involvement in her life.  It broke my heart when I saw her project featured in one of the display cases at school.  The song has a lot of sad meaning for me as well.  I can't even listen to "Buttlerfly Kisses" without tearing up.

One of my favorites would be "Landslide" (I prefer the original by Stevie Nicks).  I'm also a big fan of "Moondance" by Van Morrison and "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone."

Yes yes yes to all of the above and thank you flowergirl, I have been wondering what the title and artist on that lovely thing are.

Anyone here remember Kenny Rankin?

And 'Undun' by the Guess Who?

edited twice, once to correct grammar and once to add the reference to Undun.

Stormchild: yup, remember all...(must be in the same age group or something).
There is a song by Jewel that I remember a  lot in this journey to be myself. It's called "life uncommon"
some lyrics (maybe not completely perfect, though):
"lend your voices only to sounds of freedom...no longer lend your voice to that which you wish to be free from.  Realize that love and glory....and you will lead a life uncommon."
I think of this a lot as I break away from the negative energy of my exN.

One song that I really love, because I love the imagery of being loved and home, I guess, is "this must be the place" by the talking heads.  I especially like Shawn Colvin's version of it.  It is such a comforting song in its weird way.  "I'm just an animal looking for a home, to share the same space for a minute or two. "  When I listen to it I can get a sense of what cozy home, with all its quirkiness, feels like.

I think that art, especially books and songs (and also movies sometimes) are really helpful to me as I try to figure out all of the things I didn't learn correctly as a child (and kept doing wrong for a lot of my life so far!)

There are 3 songs that I love to listen to.  A couple of them help me remember all the pain my ex Narci caused.  Its ok to love someone even if they cant reciprocate but its also wise to remember who the person is that you love.  Its also nice to be able to remember the hardships with him and to deal with them in a healthy manner.

1.  The dance by Garth Brooks
2.  One last cry by Brian McKnight
3.  I wish I wasnt in love with you by Heather Hadley
Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!

Great Songs!

another one i like - mysteriously - is that new Eminem song (yes, I realize what a horrible influence he is on our children!) called Mockingbird. It has an awful ending (he has to be sensationalist), but he has done a couple songs that really feel loving and paternal....

Will smith did one a while back too - he re-did "Just the two of us". That used to make me cry!

The song that inspired me to break out of codependent relationships was, "All The Way," sung by Frank Sinatra.

I can't listen to that one anymore.  The original by Grover Washington was "our song."  Too bad because I love it.

wow, Vunil, that Talking Heads song is just about my favorite....which says a lot considering how much I love thier music (David Byrne is  genious).  I have not heard Shawn Colvin sing it, but I love her voice, so now I'm going music shopping!
The Talking Heads song: "heaven" is another fav, and the song "and she was" will never stop reminding me of my mom and her immenant death (it came out about 20 years ago, when she almost died then, ironically).
It is reasurring to me.
There is a song I heard Gloria Estevan singing on tv once, and not being a big fan of hers, I don't know what it is: but it's about giving her love to the people who have abused her and hurt her...because of them she has learned so much and become what she is.  I feel that way so often, I suppose I should look it up!

The song that comes to mind is "The Rose" .  Of all the versions sung by a number of musicians, I like Bet Midler's the most.

I love listening to all types of music, but there's only one song that I  cannot bear, and that would be "Cat's In the Cradle" by Harry Chapin. It breaks my heart every time I hear it.

oh, yes, that Chapin song is emotional.  Along those lines: "tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton.....I heard he won't perform that anymore (you might recall it's about his son who died)...beautiful song, though.
And a new favorite, by Frou Frou: "Let Go" ("cause there's beauty in the breakdown")...and BTW, I just LOVE thier CD (first one).
Other new favorite artists: Carbon Leaf, Blue Merle, (and not soo new): Guster.  Solid song writing and musicianship....all three.
