Along With Take What You Need
« on: November 15, 2006, 08:36:00 PM »
I wrote a post about getting what you need from the board here... That post dealt with helping oneself and helping others...

In the same sort of vein, I would like to propose that we do not "bash" one another for the way we like to post. I have to say that for the most part I try to keep my posts short, but there are days when I need or want to get something out that is longer. I often wonder if anyone reads them... or actually makes it through to the end :)

And I have to say, it would be hurtful if someone said, "That was too long and boring for me to read." I don't believe I have ever said that to someone here, as I find it rude and mean spirited.

Our lives are about choices. If you see a post that is long and not interesting, bypass it. In life there are always things that interest you more than others. I can't listen to sports radio for more than about 5 minutes before my ears glaze... but I don't condemn those who like it.

So, in the spirit of support and group kindness, I think we should try to ensure that our posts are productive in some way... helpful criticism is great... blanket wounding shouldn't be...

Love to all of you,
Beth

I find all the posts helpful in some way.  One thing I have learned to do with the "technical" posts is I will read the responses first to get a jist of the topic.  Then it seems like I have a way in to the original post and can understand it better.  Kind of letting some of you others pre-think for me!!!  When I can't tackle a topic right away it is usually because it touches a sore spot in me or my mind is having trouble settling down and concentrating.  It does help to read what the others take from it, then I feel more ready for it myself.

Gosh,
you put into words just what I do!!!! I didn't even realize it. I also scroll through and see what other's responses are. There are days (like today, alas) when my brain is too jumpy to read anything other than celebrity gossip :)

Beth

Thanks for your kindness.

The mean-spirited rudeness was actually a gift within the problem. I started a blog a few months ago, but hardly put anything on it except a couple of my poems. Meanwhile, I've been busting my hump and writing my heart out here, apparently just so people can snark and whine about having to read the things I post, as if someone was forcing them to do so, and as if there were something bizarre and dysfunctional about people discussing psychology-related issues on a clinical psychologist's psychological-recovery-oriented web site.

I'm going to copy the posts in question over to that blog. Where different people can read them. They'll be edited so they can 'stand alone' and there won't be any references to people or events here. It may not be the world's most popular blog site, but I'll be proud of it.

Without this kick in the teeth, I would probably not have made the decision to post these thoughts elsewhere. So definitely, a gift within the problem, because it's high time I started to take my writing seriously again, and put it into a more serious venue.

[The initial version of this post was pretty sarcastic. That's human, but it's not productive, so I've edited it.]

Oops, I was thinking and reacting specifically and forgot to comment generally.

Beth, my thanks were sincere. I do appreciate you saying something about this and bringing it back up for comment.

Speaking generally, it strikes me as strange that people here, of all places, don't seem to realize that bashing others is abusive.

Let me repeat that: bashing others is abusive.

Doesn't matter whether you're bashing them for having brown skin, blonde hair, quick brains, or large vocabularies. It's abusive.

Shouldn't 'we' be trying to identify and separate from stuff like that? Insofar as is possible for us?

That goes for me too, of course, with bells on.
